The Appeal Foundation was formed by a core group of Nobel Peace Laureates and individuals in 2001, to support the United Nations and member states in their efforts, and to formulate and implement a plan of action with civil society structures. The Foundation operates from coordinating offices in the United States, Sweden and South Africa.
The Appeal is a network organization through project co-development initiatives, and as a network coordinator and facilitator of projects around the world, raising both awareness and funds for projects and programs in partnership and collaboration with local and regional actors.
The mission of the foundation is to help build a global culture of peace and non-violence at local, national and international levels, through the education, support and networking of a worldwide movement of citizens, institutions, enterprises, media and governments. Provide people with innovative and creative tools for peacebuilding, conflict transformation and understanding one another.
Central to the Foundation`s vision is our children`s education. Children should learn not only `facts` and cognitive skills, but also how to be and how to live together.
Education has historically focused on developing the mind; now we must also develop, from the early stages, the wisdom, understanding and compassion inherent in each child. We must challenge the prominence of war in the history we teach, and stop telling our children that war and other forms of violence are `facts of life`.
