Nature Foundation SA is South Australia`s own wildlife and environment charity. We work with scientists, the community, business and governments to conserve our precious natural biodiversity. And we’ve been doing it for more than 30 years. In that time the Foundation has raised more than $4 million for on-the-ground projects, land conservation, education programs and vital research.
We’re a non-political, mainly voluntary organisation governed by a council of experienced conservationists, scientists, business and professional people. We actively promote good environmental practices and foster community understanding of the value of our natural heritage and the importance of conservation – now and for the future.
Essentially, we raise and distribute funds to protect the natural environment, support national parks and save native wildlife. But we’re involved in a range of other important activities as well.
Saving Species
South Australia is the mammalian extinction capital of the world. It’s shocking but it’s fact. More than 20 species of native mammals have disappeared since European settlement. The Nature Foundation works in partnership with universities, government departments, private companies, the SA Museum and our zoos to halt the decline of our native species.
Conserving Bushland
National Parks can’t do it alone. South Australia’s remnant native vegetation must also be safeguarded through private ownership and stewardship, or we will lose precious habitats for ever.
Bushbank SA
The Nature Foundation is helping to conserve native bushland on private land through a ‘revolving’ fund called Bushbank SA. We buy, ‘protect’ and on-sell land with important conservation value, leaving it in the hands of landholders who care about preserving native bushland.
Good Business Environment Awards
Through these annual awards, which link into the national Banksia awards, the Nature Foundation aims to promote good environmental practices in South Australia.
Research Grants
Nature conservation, environmental protection and sustainability – without research, the entire endeavour fails. Research must be ongoing and ever-present; we must continue to discover how to mend, how to prevent, how to protect and how to nurture.
Post-graduate Scholarships
Our scholarship scheme promotes the need for sound scientific research which is necessary to underpin long-term conservation programs. It’s also a practical way of supporting the conservationists of the future, which we think is a worthy investment.
