PERSONAL STATEMENT

TO LOVE AND UNDERSTAND HER

One summer night after my middle school graduation, I watched Casablanca for the first time. While Rick stands quietly watching the plane fade into the night sky, my heart ached and tears swelled up in my eyes. I was struck not only by the most intolerable yet delicious sorrow, which tortured but also enriched my heart. As if bewitched, I was glued to the screen and watched the film over seventy times. I remember every detail of mise en scene and camera movement; I read lines along with Humphrey Bogart …That was the first time I recognized the power of a great film. Later when I graduated from high school, I was given two offers, business administration at Western Ontario University and film-television at Peking University, I chose the latter. Because from the day I fell in love with film, I had been longing to understand her more, and to commit myself to the art of film.

In my film history class, I found that not only my destiny, but also a nation’s destiny is closely connected with films. With my passion for films, I have developed an interest in the cultural history of early twentieth century Chinese films, especially those of the 1930s. The interactions between society and film fascinate me:how a historical event affects the aesthetic principles; how film was utilized to express individual’s opinion during social movements; and finally how these historical changes and transformations in culture constitute the present. I enjoy studying the early history of Chinese film, for there existed a tension between Chinese conventions and the modernization process. My influences have been diverse. I read the works of Leo Ou-fan Lee and Yingjin Zhang, for not only their familiarity of Chinese culture but also their broad field of vision; I read Dai Jinhua for her structural proficiency as well as powerful style of writing.

In my junior year I applied for the exchange program to Hong Kong University, as I believed this would provide me with a golden chance to experience the dynamic cultural interactions in Hong Kong and to broaden my horizon. After severe competition, I was selected as one of the ten students from the whole PKU to enter into the program. While there, I often spent whole days exploiting the precious resources for film study which I found in the university library and Hong Kong Film Archive. Moreover, with my video camera I went out to explore the city – to visit museums and art galleries, to wander along streets and lanes, and to talk to people from different cultural backgrounds-just being immersed in the environment. Gradually as I understood more about HK and its unique culture, I came to understand more about HK films – Stanley Kwan’s concerns, Wong Kar Wai’s sentiments, and John Woo’s aesthetic skills. I gained not only knowledge but also new perspectives for appreciating and making a film, and I also learned the importance of exposing myself to different cultures. For this reason upon my graduation from the best university in China, I believe it is the time for me to sail further-to the United States where diverse cultures meet.
