The Unit Social and Industrial Ecology at the Department of Geography at the University of Zuerich and the Chair of Ecological Systems Design at the Institute of Environmental Engineering at ETHZ are developing in collaboration with research partners in Colombia an interdisciplinary project entitled: ” Life Cycle Human Exposure and Risk Assessment of Pesticide Application on Agricultural Products in Colombia”.
The successful PhD candidate will focus on the assessment of dermal and inhalation exposure derived from the use of pesticides in agricultural production in Colombia. He/she will first develop and empirically validate models for assessing exposure under different conditions such as indoors (greenhouse application) and outdoors applications (different weather conditions, backpack and airplane applications). Exposure modeling will include uncertainty and sensitivity analysis. Second, the exposure concentrations will be related to thresholds and no-effect levels to quantify the risk to farm workers and bystanders. Third, she/he will develop recommendations for improving potential adverse conditions in Colombia.
The candidate will be working in a highly motivated, interdisciplinary and international team. He/ she will be encouraged to develop within the frame of the project his/her own ideas.
The project is performed in collaboration with the Universidad Nacional (Bogota), UNIBOYACA (Tunja) and has a renowned advisory board.
