The Division of Structural Engineering currently has 25 members of staff and is part of the Department of Building and Environmental Engineering. Research at the division is conducted in close collaboration with industry and public organisations and focuses on two disciplines: concrete structures and steel and timber structures.
Job description
Project: Modelling of Steel Bridges for Fatigue Design and Assessment
The design of steel and composite railway bridges is often governed by the fatigue performance of the bridge and the fatigue strength of its various details. The correct and accurate determination of the various loads affecting these details is vital for economical, successful design. The accurate modelling of the behaviour of complex structures such as bridges is yet more important when the task is related to assessments of existing bridges. Generally, the design models and assumptions that are employed with reference to the ultimate load-bearing capacity of bridges are not directly suitable for fatigue design and assessment. The current PhD project is mainly concerned with problems related to modelling steel bridges and steel bridge details with respect to fatigue. The questions that are being analysed include: What is an appropriate level of FE modelling for steel bridges for fatigue assessment? Which “secondary” elements and load-carrying systems need to be included in the model? How should various types of connection be modelled? How should the results from different FE models be treated and correlated to suitable detail classes in the standard for fatigue evaluation? The project is part of a large European collaboration project financed by the “Research Fund for Coal and Steel”. You will work in close collaboration with several European research groups within the field of fatigue in steel structures. We therefore expect you to have a very good knowledge of the English language and have a proven ability to work in a group.
As a PhD student, you will work with one or more experienced researchers, in addition to your supervisor. We are participating in the National Research School together with some other universities of technology in Sweden.
You will be employed by Chalmers and your salary will be regulated by the agreement for PhD students. Part of your working time (maximum 20%) will include duties at the division, often related to teaching in the undergraduate programme.
Qualifications
A suitable background for the candidate is a university degree (master’s or a corresponding degree) in civil engineering, specialising in structural engineering or mechanical engineering.
