A cost efficient exploitation of wind energy in shallow water is based on fixed wind turbines. In deeper waters floating turbines provide an attractive alternative. The present research project will focus on the analysis and development of wind turbines in intermediate water-depths, comparing fixed and floating concepts. This involves both establishing a set of concept evaluation criteria and applying these in a conceptual evaluation of wind turbines for water depth 50-100 m. While the focus will be on buoyant support structures such as tension leg or catenary-moored spar or semi-submersible systems, bottom-fixed or articulated wind turbine concepts will also be considered. An important part of this study will be the assessment of the dynamic behaviour of the whole system under wind and wave forces.
Project team and contact
The work in this project supported by Statoil, will be carried out with Professors Paul Sclavounos This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The work will be integrated in ongoing research related to renewable offshore energy conducted at CeSOS and in the Offshore Wind Technology Centre (Nowitech).
Background
The PhD candidate must have an MSc degree in marine technology, mechanical or civil engineering or another relevant field. The candidate must be qualified for admittance as a PhD student at NTNU and have good English language skills. The candidate will be a part of a research team residing in Trondheim.
Remuneration
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, grade 45 – 51 on the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 355 400 to NOK 394 200 per year (before tax). PhD students are normally remunerated at wage level 45. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.
Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship appointments in universities and university colleges. The goal of each of the announced positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants are obliged to engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicant’s plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. A contract of employment will be set up for the engagement period regulating the rights and duties of the PhD student. The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The fellowship is awarded for 3 years.
