The Department of Economics at the University of Vienna invites applications for one scholarship for its doctoral program in economics. The successful applicant will become a member of the research training group Issues in the Global Economy: Dynamics, Governance, and Information. The scholarship is funded until September 30, 2010. The total annual salary is approximately € 14,400, health insurance is included, and tuition fees are waived.
The program provides advanced training in selected fields of economics with some emphasis on the theme of the research training group. Students are exposed to different theoretical and methodological approaches in order to be able to explore research questions in economics in an original way. Core courses in macroeconomics, microeconomics, and econometrics as typically offered in the first year of a PhD study are not part of this program. Students have to pass the required number of courses (60 ECTS points) and must write a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of two faculty members. All courses are taught in English. The dissertation must contain original research carried out while on the program. Students are also required to participate in seminars and workshops held at the department.
Applications are welcome from students who hold a Master’s degree in economics or a closely related field, passed with distinction. Applicants should be interested in conducting independent research in theoretical, empirical, or applied economics and must have a strong quantitative background. In particular, they should have completed advanced courses in macroeconomics, microeconomics (including game theory), and econometrics. The selection of candidates will be based on an evaluation of their aptitude and competence for research. A special interest in research topics that are relevant for the theme of the research training group is a plus.
The University of Vienna is an equal opportunities employer and intends to increase the number of female employees. Qualified women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply for the scholarship. In the case of equal qualifications, female candidates will be preferred. |
