The John Carter Brown Library at Brown University is offering research fellowships to advanced graduate students, scholars and independent researchers whose work is centred on the colonial history of the America’s, North and South, including all aspects of the European, African and Native American involvement. Fellowships are of two types: Short-term fellowships (for periods of two to four months and carry a stipend of $2,100 per month) and long-term fellowships (for five to ten months with a monthly stipend of $4,200).

Study Subject (s): Sponsorship of research at the John Carter Brown Library is reserved exclusively for scholars whose work is centred on the colonial history of the Americas, North and South, including all aspects of the European, African, and Native American involvement.

 

Course Level: Fellowships are available to advanced graduate students, scholars and independent researchers for research program.

Eligibility:

 

-Short-term Fellowships are open to citizens of the United States and foreign nationals who are engaged in pre- or post-doctoral, or independent, research. Graduate students must have passed their preliminary or general examinations at the time of application.

 

-Long-Term Fellowships: These include NEH Fellowships, for which an applicant must be a citizen of the United States of America or have lived in the U.S. for the three years preceding the application deadline. For other long-term fellowships, all nationalities are eligible. Graduate students may not hold JCB Long-Term Fellowships. PhD candidates are welcome to apply for long-term fellowships if all degree requirements, including the successful defense of their dissertation, have been met by the December 15 deadline.

 

Scholarship Open for International Students: Citizens of the United States and foreign nationals can apply for these fellowships.

 

Scholarship Description: The John Carter Brown Library Fellowship Program, now in its fiftieth year, was created to give scholars of the early Americas from the U.S. and abroad an opportunity to pursue their work in proximity to a distinguished collection of primary sources. Approximately forty fellowships are awarded annually for periods of two to ten months. Fellowships are available to advanced graduate students, scholars, and independent researchers, the main criteria for awards being the merit and significance of the proposal, the qualifications of the candidate, and the relevance the Library’s holdings to the proposed research project. Fellowships are of two types: Short-Term Fellowships and Long-Term Fellowships.

 

Number of award(s): Approximately forty fellowships are awarded.

 

Duration of award(s): Short-term John Carter Brown Library Fellowships are available for periods of two to four months and Long-Term Fellowships are offered for five to ten months.

 

What does it cover? Short-term John Carter Brown Library Fellowships carry a stipend of $2,100 per month. Long-Term Fellowships are for five to ten months with a monthly stipend of $4,200.

 

Selection Criteria: The main criteria for awards being the merit and significance of the proposal, the qualifications of the candidate and the relevance the Library’s holdings to the proposed research project.

 

Notification: Announcements of Fellowship awards will be made in late March 2014.

 

 How to Apply: Applicants who are eligible for both long-term and short-term fellowships are welcome to apply for both, but must submit a separate application for each type of award. Applications for each category of fellowship are reviewed by different committees. The selection of long-term fellows is made first. If you apply for both and are awarded a long-term fellowship, your short-term application will automatically be removed from the short-term award consideration. The complete application for a John Carter Brown Library Research Fellowship, for either short-term or long-term awards, consists of the following parts:

 

-Online Fellowship Application Cover Sheet (which must be filled out and submitted for the application to be complete)

 

- Application consisting of the three parts, saved as a single pdf, and sent as an attachment to  JCBL_Fellowships-at-Brown.edu:

 

- Letters of recommendation

 

If unable to submit application materials electronically, hard copies may be sent by post (Part A, the Online Fellowship Application Cover Sheet, should still be submitted electronically, if at all possible).
